Blending couture and architecture, Dior’s iconic cannage motif is reinvented once again this season with a bold outlook. Its fascinating odyssey is one submerged with the Maison’s rich history – its identity inspired by the light-hued mesh that upholstered the Napoleon III chairs found in the haute couture salons of 30 Montaigne. The symbolic chair’s notable presence since Christian Dior’s first defiles has defined the Maison’s legacy in a unique manner, welcoming guests who graced the fashionable soirĂ©es at the salons.
It wasn’t until the debut of the Lady Dior, originally named the Chouchou, that the emblematic cannage motif rose to its prominent status. Seen on Lady Diana, the coveted handbag was instantly recognizable everywhere thanks to its structured and timeless silhouette that was decorated with the symbolic cannage stitching. Rounded handles complemented the bag effortlessly while playful charms – another homage to Monsieur Dior who carried lucky charms with him at all times – gave the handbag a charming allure.
This season, the cannage identity is reimagined by Maria Grazia Chiuri in an audacious manner. The new motif dubbed the Graphic Cannage offers a new perspective on the timeless icon, rendered in a modern 3D version that reflects the House’s distinctive creativity and ethos. The motif’s emblematic1G lines are sketched in a new style, featuring interweaving lines that give an interesting perspective and texture on the Maison’s most decorated handbags including the everlasting Lady Dior, Lady D-Joy, Dior Toujours and the new Dior Groove bag. Embodying the spirit of craftsmanship and innovation, the new Graphic Cannage embellishes the Maison’s objects of desire effortlessly to give a striking look that will stand the test of time.
